What is Licorice Root Extract?




Derived from the glycyrrhiza glabra plant, licorice root grows in Southern Europe and West Asia. It has been used to treat a wide variety of dermatologic conditions, such as eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea.

What is good about Licorice Root Extract?

Licorice root extract is a powerful ingredient that contains over 300 different active compounds including liquiritin, glabridin, and licochalcone, that help fade and prevent hyperpigmentation.

It also contains flavonoids and another potent antioxidant known as glycyrrhizin, which plays a role in fighting free radicals and minimizing inflammation.

What does Licorice Root Extract do?

Two active compounds abundant in licorice root, Liquiritin and glabridin, are known to help fade existing dark spots and hyperpigmentation. Overtime liquiritin also helps improve overall skin tone and clarity.

Licorice root contains another active compound, licochalcone, that works to minimize the production of tyrosinase to combat discoloration and the production of dark spots, as well as help control excess oil production and increase antioxidant production.

Another of licorice root's active compounds, glycyrrhizin, can help reduce redness and supports a healthy inflammation response.

Who is Licorice Root Extract good for?

Licorice root extract is ideal for individuals with melasma, hyperpigmentation, or other mild dermatologic conditions. While non-irritating and suitable for most skin types, it is an active ingredient and is not suitable for pregnant women. Breastfeeding women should consult with their doctor prior to use.
